Pride of Guernsey: Heart-warming stories of care, love and generosity

THE Channel Islands Co-operative Society is a community retailer, owned by Channel Islanders and employing more than 1,000 people, and every day we see the important role that grandparents play in family life.

Whether it’s one of our colleagues proudly showing photos of the family’s newest addition or customers shopping while looking after their grandchildren, our islands are enriched by the contribution that grandparents make, which is why The Channel Islands Co-operative Society is once again sponsoring the Grandparent/s of the Year Award at the Pride of Guernsey Awards.

This is our fourth year sponsoring this category and we have always been incredibly moved by the genuine and heart-warming stories of care, love and generosity told by devoted family members of worthy nominees.

Grandparents are very much an integral part of family life.

Once again, choosing a winner from the three incredible finalists last year was a very humbling experience.

The winner, Pamela Dodd, was nominated by one of her grandchildren and praised for the continued care she gives her daughter, who has spina bifida. Pamela was described as always happy, someone who never complains and is caring and giving to all the family, which includes seven children, 22 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

I have absolutely no doubt that the nominations this year will be equally as moving and inspiring.

I encourage everyone who is lucky enough to have a grandparent to consider nominating them as a way of thanking and recognising the sacrifices that they selflessly make.

Colin Macleod, Channel Islands Co-operative Society chief executive
