Steve and Mary Martel have been nominated for the Neighbour of the Year award, sponsored by Guernsey Energy.

Jenny Benjamin and the Martels have been neighbours for more than 20 years.

‘My neighbours are real stars. Whenever my grandchildren from abroad come to stay for the summer, they lend their tent, bring round home-grown cucumbers and ignore the raised decibel levels,’ Jenny said.

‘When I needed a new fence and a tree fell down, they allowed the contractors to work from their side of the boundary and even lent a hand to the work. 

‘When I had a new extension built, for a whole year they allowed the builders to park on their land. They never complained once about the noise, the dust or any inconvenience. It was absolutely invaluable to the efficiency of the project.

‘They’re very warm, generous people.

‘I tell people I have neighbours from heaven,’ she said.
