Mick and Barbara Gill

Mick and Barbara Gill have been nominated for the Neighbour of the Year award, sponsored by Guernsey Energy.

The Weysoms and the Gills have been neighbours for more than 40 years, but in the last few years Mike Weysom has become less mobile than he used to be, and the Gills have been a phenomenal help to him and his wife.

‘For the last three years in particular, they have been a constant support and lifeline, ferrying me back and forth to GP and specialist appointments, greatly helping me with my garden, cutting hedges – and vegetable plots – with shopping and all sorts of help or jobs around the house which I am not physically able to do,’ Mike said.

Mike has a vegetable patch allotment which he greatly enjoys working on.

‘If I didn’t have them I wouldn’t be able to do my allotment – the compost is too heavy for me and I can’t lift it,’ he said. Mick helps him out and takes his compost and garden cuttings down to the tip for him.

When Mike’s wife had a fall and he couldn’t lift her back up, he rang the Gills and Barbara quickly came round to help her back to her feet.

‘They never say no – even at short notice. We simply could not have coped without them – and I am forever grateful.’
