Pride of Guernsey: Emma Sykes

EMMA SYKES is a talented 13-year-old sportswoman, nominated for the Butterfield-sponsored Young Achiever of the Year award by her under-14s netball coach.

‘She has talent to read any game situation with strength and resilience far beyond her years,’ said coach Heidi Rosamund. ‘She is a very quiet girl who has really started to come out of her shell, but she is not the type to seek the limelight.’
Emma also plays basketball. At age 11 she joined a team in the senior women’s league and has since earned her place as the youngest ever Guernsey senior basketball representative.
‘Emma is quiet and laid back but on court she comes to life,’ said basketball coach Pat Ogier. Emma was also awarded St Sampson’s High Year 8 sports girl of the year and has taken on a coaching role with the Guernsey Panthers summer school, passing on her passion and knowledge to the younger players in the game.
