A ‘BRILLIANT ROLE MODEL’ has been nominated for this year’s Pride of Guernsey Young Achiever award, sponsored by St Pierre Park.

Jennifer Thomas was nominated by a member of the Guernsey Hockey club for being a brilliant role model in the hockey community over the last year.

She has played for the Guernsey Hockey Ladies 1st XI team for the last two years, showing an excellent attitude to training and improving herself as a hockey player and a person.

Last year she was made captain of the girls’ under-18 team, winning the players’ player of the year award.

The nominator said she has led her teammates with humility and has shown a caring and compassionate attitude to younger players who train with the team.

Jennifer has also been central to the fundraising efforts to help her team go on a tour, which was unfortunately cancelled.

‘Jenny always pushes adults at Guernsey Hockey to make sure that there are always great opportunities for young people to play a sport that she loves,’ the nominator said.

During lockdown, she gained national attention within the hockey community, through England Hockey, by running a marathon in her garden, raising almost £2,000 for the Social Investment Fund to support the island’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

‘This stand-out moment came from Jenny, who has never

done any running before, trying to help people who had been less fortunate than herself during a very difficult time,’

they said.
