TWO people who are described as fun-loving and always spreading joy have been nominated for the Pride of Guernsey Grandparents of the Year award.

Tina and Tony Holland have had their names put forward by their granddaughter, Freya, for the Channel Islands Co-operative Society-sponsored award.

‘My grandparents are both essential workers who have worked throughout the coronavirus; my pop is a postman who has delivered sunflower seeds to the children on his round who have brightened up their windows with rainbows, which was a very nice thing to do.

‘They arranged a socially-distanced Easter egg hunt and it was very difficult not be able to give them a hug.

‘Pop has also given out lots of Easter eggs to the children on his round. My nan and pop spend lots of their time looking after us and have delivered food to us during the lockdown.

‘Sometimes in the early morning pop will bring us a Senners delivery.

‘They are very hard-working and have also made sure that other people have not gone without during the last few months. We love them very much and think that they deserve this award.’

Tina and Tony teach their grandchildren about gardening, in particular how to grow fruit and vegetables, and to be brave around the chickens and hold them properly.

Not only do they pick up the grandchildren from school, they also have them round for Sunday brunch, over for sleepovers, and take them on holiday to France.

Freya thinks her grandparents are down-to-earth ordinary people who live their lives in an extraordinary way.
