JOY LIGGETT and Cathy Morgan have been nominated for the Sustainability Hero of the Year award, sponsored by Aon.

Joy and Cathy both volunteer at the Victorian Walled Kitchen Garden and are part of the Guernsey Botanical Trust.

Joy has worked with the Victorian Walled Kitchen Garden for nine years, and Cathy has worked for the Botanical Trust for 12.

Both have been involved with restoring the garden, which they have shared with the wider community through events all year round, including the Halloween ‘Souper Spooky’ event.

They said: ‘It is greatly satisfying to know that our work helps to generate income which is ploughed back into the running costs for the upkeep of this unique place.’

Emily Abreu, who nominated the pair, said: ‘Both are always extremely welcoming, friendly, and happy to show you around the array of colourful flowers and vegetables which are grown in the garden, with smiles on their faces. The produce is then picked and available for islanders to buy, with all proceeds going towards the garden and the new shop currently being built.

‘Joy and Cathy provide historical tours and continue to nurture the garden, which is ideal for sustainable growing and provides habitats for Guernsey’s pollinators. Thank you both for all the work you do.’
