ORIANA WHEELER has been nominated for the St Pierre Park-sponsored Young Achiever award.

Miss Wheeler, 17, has been swimming for the island since she was 12.

She was put forward by Sara Parfit, who said: ‘Oriana is a swimmer with the Beau Sejour Barracudas.

‘She trains 10 hours in the water each week along with time in the gym.

‘Despite only being 17 years old Oriana was selected as a reserve swimmer for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

‘Although she realised it was unlikely she would go to the Commonwealth Games, Oriana trained tirelessly in support of the other Guernsey swimmers.

‘In July Oriana qualified to compete in the British National Swimming Championships where she placed sixth in Britain for the 200m butterfly.’

Miss Wheeler said she was very happy to have won silver at the championships, where she came in at two seconds off her PB.

She said she has known swimming all her life, because she is surrounded by family who have a love for it.

Miss Wheeler is currently completing her International Baccalaureate Diploma at the Sixth Form Centre and is looking at universities that will support her swimming career.
