DENISE COHU, manager of the Guernsey Voluntary Service’s Russels Day Centre, has been nominated for the Specsavers-sponsored Carer of the Year award.

‘Denise is a very caring and kind person,’ said nominator Ellen Hughes.

‘She helps to make our mum’s day a happy one.’

Ms Cohu has worked at the day centre for around six years.

‘There is never a dull day at the Russels Day Centre – Denise is always thinking of fun and interesting ideas to stimulate the attendees,’ Ms Hughes said.

‘Denise can always think of a solution to a problem as best she can.

‘She heads a wonderful team of helpers that make a difference to mum’s life and ours, her family.’

Themed days throughout the year brought joy to her mum’s day, she added.

‘Denise goes the extra mile.

‘As a family we are so happy that mum has access to this. Mum will come home and say “we’ve had a laugh today”.’

Ms Cohu said her job involved promoting social interaction, conversation and inclusion.

‘It has been, and remains, a pleasure and a privilege to meet and work alongside so many lovely and interesting people,’ she said.

‘They touch and enrich my life and the lives of the wonderful teams.’

She enjoyed how varied her role was.

‘I love the sense of community here – everyone works as a team.

‘I like to be able to contribute to people’s life, even if it is just in a small way.’
