Charles McHugh’s ‘tireless fundraising efforts’ and support for the Guernsey Rugby Academy has led him to be nominated for Sports Volunteer of the Year.
Having fallen in love with rugby as a seven-year-old, Charles has since dedicated more than 20 years as a volunteer for the club, running the Guernsey Rugby Association, which provides rugby coaching support in every school in the island, as well as leading the Guernsey Sports Lottery and selling more than £5,000 of tickets for the club’s raffle at the Senior Siam Cup.
‘Charles was also a coach within the Rugby Academy and even paid out of his own pocket to ensure that every player had an opportunity to travel away to play rugby,’ said nominator Steve Melbourne.
‘He was tireless in his fundraising efforts and could be seen in St Peter Port on Christmas shopping nights selling raffle tickets as well as gaining a great number of academy sponsors in his tenure as chairman.’
Charles is now a president of Guernsey Raiders and is excited to see the club continue to grow, currently with more than 400 members.
