Katie Margetts has been nominated for the Sports Volunteer of the Year award

‘THE beating heart of Guernsey basketball’ Katie Margetts has been nominated for the Sports Volunteer of the Year award.

Katie has been at the Guernsey Basketball Association for 15 years and is currently serving as their women’s development coordinator.

Aside from representing Guernsey in basketball as the most prolific of scorers, she has also played for the island in touch rugby and softball.

‘Her commitment as a player, referee, official, committee member and supporter for both women’s and men’s basketball knows no bounds, and she is one of the most supportive people in the basketball community,’ said her nominator, James Falla.

‘The recent junior inter-insular event which took place in Guernsey was driven by Katie as chief organiser and was a great occasion.’

This inter-insular was the first of its kind, with three Guernsey junior teams, the U15 and U18 girls and U15 boys.

Her dedication to developing to sport for the younger generation is obvious, having been part of GBA’s Future Stars programme for the past 12 years out of its 13 in existence.

The U18 girls won their match against Jersey, and is a sign of all of Katie’s work put in to developing game on the island and to close the gap on our neighbour.
