A two-day dog rescue mission has seen oyster farmer Justin De Carteret nominated for Emergency Hero of the Year.
When Sue Whittaker’s dog Lea went missing in Herm, residents were quick to suggest it might have fallen over the cliffs, prompting Justin to take his boat out after work to search the area.
‘We all love animals so it just felt natural, we had everyone in Herm looking for it but after the first day we still couldn’t find it,’ he said.
‘The day after, I left work at lunchtime and spotted a little head at the bottom of the cliffs so I got the dinghy out and swam the final bit to get to the dog.’
Once rescued Justin arranged for a friend to pick up Sue and Lea, taking them to Isabelle Vets where Lea unfortunately did not make it.
‘Without Justin’s perseverance Lea would have had an agonising death. But I was able to be with her at the end. Justin is a true hero.’
