RNLI has been nominated for Emergency Hero of the Year

The RNLI saves lives at sea 24 hours a day, seven days a week as it has done for the island and all its passers-by since 1861.

The crew are all volunteers alongside their own day jobs and they put their lives on the line to protect others out on the water where conditions can change in an instant.

Operating on the frontline with nature makes their job doubly difficult.

‘They all work very hard behind the scenes making sure they are able to rescue people in many ways,’ said their nominator for the Emergency Hero of the Year award, Pauline Bisson.

For Pauline, the importance of the lifeboat service to our island community could not be overstated.

‘The situation they’re called to is always unknown to them until they get there.

‘It’s second nature to them, they get out and do it. It’s part of being an islander.’

From accidents to sudden illnesses to ships in distress, the lifeboat handles them all.

The RNLI is always looking for more ways to protect lives at sea, and this year a new inshore lifeboat was added to the fleet.
