Rachel Bishop

Rachel Bishop has been nominated for Overcoming Adversity

Rachel Bishop was diagnosed with type one diabetes at just four years old, which caused diabetic retinopathy causing severe loss in eyesight. Rachel became registered as blind in 2013 and is now completely blind in her right eye and has no peripheral vision in her left eye.

‘Rachel volunteers four times a year at the Boogie in the Bar for Dementia Friendly Guernsey, where she is the DJ and plays 50s to 70s music. It allows her a sense of freedom,’ said Kay Craven, who nominated Rachel.

Rachel has recently had her official diagnosis of autism which makes her feel liberated and understands why she always felt different.

‘It is her superpower,’ said Kay.

Rachel loves playing at Guernsey dementia events and loves making people feel good through music.

‘Although Rachel has health issues, she is very happy to give back and help any charity, she is always willing to help others and is always happy,’ said Kay.

‘It’s lovely getting the recognition,’ said Rachel.

She said she gets most enjoyment through being a DJ, and collecting records from the 1950s and 1960s to play at events.
